What is SafeHouse Ethiopia?Safe House Ethiopia is a walled compound in Addis Ababa. The compound consists of a kitchen, feeding area, library, TV room, children’s class rooms and gathering area, a small center for teenage girls, bathrooms and showers with proper plumbing, a lawn, playground & basketball court, etc. The staff at Safe House Ethiopia consists of 3 cooks, 1 hygiene officer, 2 cleaners, several teachers, two security staff and a physical education coach just to name a few They are given breakfast and sent to private school with a lunch, they return after school for dinner (they are now having 3 meals a day instead of one)! A good month will bring in approximately $12.00 from a child’s labors on the streets. That $12 dollars per month is often the difference between a family eating one meal or two meals a day. During free time and weekends, the children enjoy basketball and soccer, watching movies, playing board games and using the compound’s library. Many of the children that come to us have to be “trained” in being children. For with the burdens of having to make a living for their family, they have never known the joys of a true childhood. We are in the process of building a clinic so that the children will be given regular qualified medical care.
